8th graders in Mrs. Berry's Social Studies classes are learning about the different taxes imposed on the British colonists before our American Revolution. During theirTax Activity, Mrs. Berry took on the roll of Parliament Member Lord Berry from the House of Lords. We had King George III with us and another member of Parliament from the House of Commons. As Lord Berry, Mrs. Berry charged for various taxes that the British colonists (students) had to pay to the tax collector. The tax collector in each class period had a very busy job of collecting taxes. There was no tarring and feathering of our tax collectors! They were well protected by the members of Parliament. Through the activity the students/British colonists soon learned that the tax collector did not make much money. The tax collector collected 10% of the taxes, while British Parliament collected 50% of the taxes and King George III collected 40% of the taxes. All the money collected went for the betterment of Great Britain and not her 13 colonies.
Mrs. Berry's 7th Grade Social Studies students made leaves representing the 9/11 Survivor Tree. The original tree was growing in the World Trade Center Plaza prior to 9/11. After the attacks it was covered with debris but discovered to still be alive. It was brought to NYC Parks & Recreation and nursed back to health for 10 years. It was returned to the 9/11 memorial site in 2010. It is the only living object that made it back to the site alive. It is an inspiration to many.

Last week in STEM...Kindergarten cut vegetables for stone soup, 2nd grade made shadow drawings, 4th Grade learned about electricity with snap circuits,, 6th grade built earthquake buildings and 7th grade designed legos.

In Mrs. Berry's Junior High Social Studies class, 7th graders learned how to properly fold an American Flag.
In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day on Thursday, Sept 10th, we will have a "You Matter Day" on Thursday. Please send your students to school in purple and/or teal if you can! We will use this day here at Smithton Elementary to emphasize the importance of each student as a valued member of our school community.
